Motor vehicle accidents (MVAs) are the most frequent kind of trauma experienced by American men, and the second most frequently experienced trauma for American women. Furthermore, MVAs have been found to be the single leading cause of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in the general population. Yet surprisingly, very little is known about the assessment and treatment of road crash survivors, and few studies have looked at the psychological and psychosocial effects of surviving an accident. Until now, researchers and clinicians have had no source of comprehensive information on this widespread phenomenon.

After the Crash: Assessment and Treatment of Motor Vehicle Accident Survivors—the first book published on this important topic—provides as extensive study of this long-neglected population. The authors draw on their own extensive research and clinical care of MVA survivors; data from their groundbreaking 5-year study, and Albany MVA Project; and the current research findings.

Written in a clear and lucid style, and illustrated by a wealth of charts, guides, case studies, and clinical advice, this volume will appeal to a broad audience of practitioners, researchers, and physicians, attorneys who handle MVA survivor cases; and those interested in public safety issues.
