This festschrift, dedicated to Herschel W. Leibowitz, examines some of the most interesting research currently being conducted in the field of visual perception and performance. The opening section reprints a classic paper by Leibowitz on the symbiosis between basic and applied research. Subsequent sections reflect on and extend his work in psychophysics.
